Description

The power of resilience within organizations and can transform an average company into a powerhouse. Yet, even in times of rapid disruptive change, there is no manual for building resilient organizations. This book is that manual.

Resilience, left to individuals, will only ever be built by people in the moments that require them to dig deep and find it. The real power in building resilience before we need it, lies in what we can accomplish when our organizations become resilient. This book presents a simple framework for leaders and organizations to prepare for sustainable results in the face of rapid, disruption.

The power for organizations lies in the act of methodically and collaboratively building a collective resilience framework to increase their ability to thrive in the face of complex challenges for which the answer, and often even the definition of the problem itself, may not be obvious. These challenges frequently require both the organization and the leaders within them to make trade-offs in values and loyalties. Often, an individual’s resilience will ‘get them through’ such changes, but a more effective approach is to build organizational resilience before we need it.

Building resilience involves intentional preparation to increase our ability to emerge from challenges better equipped to deal with them than we were in the past–a transformation into a stronger self. For organizations in an environment of rapid, disruptive change, there is often no ‘back’ to bounce to after disruption, because by the time they right themselves things have changed.

This book presents a simple framework that can be applied to both individuals and organizations. It’s proven and it works.

Written in our ‘pull no punches’ style, Resilience: It’s Not About Bouncing Back begins by explaining the case for resilience, how building it is not only possible, but imperative for creating successful leaders and organizations in today’s rapidly changing world. The book goes on to present the our proven, proprietary LeaderShift Resilience Framework drawing on real examples and pointed exercises to deliver a down-to-earth strategy for building resilient leaders and companies.

Connecting the dots between Resilience and ground-breaking work on Adaptive Leadership from Harvard’s Ron Heifetz and others, we’ve intertwined our own wisdom gleaned from years spent tackling these issues with leaders across the globe. The result is a candid, insightful and easily absorbed template that helps organizations banish ‘change fatigue’ once and for all and instead be energized and elevated by disruption – one leader at a time.

Spanning a combined five decades of corporate leadership positions and consulting work focused on organization restructuring and leadership development, Cynthia Barlow and Jennifer Eggers have seen thousands of organizations struggle in the face of change. They have seen it all ¬– the good and the bad – and believe that resilience is the key ingredient to building healthy, thriving leaders and organizations. Cynthia runs C3 Conversations, Inc., a boutique consulting firm out of Toronto, coaching leaders and delivering life-changing personal-growth programs for over 30 years. Jennifer runs LeaderShift Insights, a firm focused on building adaptive leadership and alignment at some of the most recognized brands in the world. She founded her firm after serving in several leadership roles for Fortune 50 companies.

Don’t Just Bounce Back–Bounce Back Stronger!

I have heard Jennifer Eggers speak and I have studied with her at Harvard. She is a true leadership expert and a deep Adaptive Leadership practitioner. In this book Jennifer and Cynthia combine their shared wisdom and collective experience to show how leaders must not only be adaptive but also resilient. I appreciate the emphasis on not just bouncing back but also on bouncing back even stronger—as an individual, team and organization. This is a great a great book for leaders looking to develop this needed skill in our complex world.

Exceptional book with practical guidance and examples for both personal and professional growth!

The authors noted that a ball, once bounced, never bounces back as high as where it started.
“Resilience is not about bouncing back. Resilience is about moving forward more energized, elevated and equipped for what’s next. Building resilience involves intentional preparation to increase the ability to emerge from challenges better equipped to deal with the next. This is not a return to the former state of mind or to the past. It is a transformation into a stronger self, so that the next time disruption hits one will be better prepared.”
This book shows how you can become resilient before, during and after hardships, and why that is more important than solely coping with optimism. We weren’t made to survive, we were made to thrive! It touches upon the Serenity Prayer and having the courage to change the things that are within your power to change… a MUST READ for anyone who wants to rise above life’s challenges!

Principles of success applied to difficult challenges

As a coach, I find this book is based on many of the same principles of success I already know and teach myself, i.e. taking responsibility, knowing your core values and beliefs, being aware of your automatic failure mechanisms, being prepared etc. However, I have never yet encountered those principles applied so beautifully to the question of personal and organizational resilience.
This book is a great practical guide to follow, either on a personal level or as a leader.. The concept is broken down to easy chunks with actionable suggestions for practical implementation. I believe than any executive should be aware of the concepts in this book in order to vaccinate his organization from being brought down by the inevitable crises that are sure to come.

    Tremendous wisdom, made practical

I’m an executive coach, and this is the book I’ve been looking for for so many clients. Decades of smarts (and I appreciate they acknowledge their sources) distilled into instructive stories, clear guidance, and a bit of workbooking, so readers can make it real in their own lives as they go. This address resilience as an individual professional or leader and how to help teams and organizations navigate change and come through more energized and capable. Gifting this to a client tonight, and I’m sure I’ll send it to many more.

    Practical, ready-to-use guidance on resilience.

In this book, the authors have taken a key concept in life and business success — resilience — and broken down the elements that make it. What I liked the most about this guide were the summaries of key points with each chapter, the exercises to help develop this skill. “Making it stick” — is key. How many books have you read that present concepts and then leave you to figure out how to integrate them into your real life? This book provides value, practical advice and the authors’ real-life experiences to make it clear just how we can move forward, prepared for situations in the future that may require resilience. Definitely worth the read.

Brilliant, a Must-Read for all Managers, Leaders, and Aspiring Leaders

This is an amazing book everyone, especially anyone who aspires to be a manager or leader, should read. At an individual level, the book examines many familiar personal growth teachings from a slightly different angle and application, and provided me with a few aha moments. At the organizational level, it takes the same principles and applies them to companies and businesses (which, of course, are aggregates of individuals). Sprinkled throughout the book are many personal anecdotes and examples, which help clarify slightly abstract concepts.
    I highly recommend this book.

Fabulous – has a depth not seen seen in typical business books

A fabulous book, practical, engaging, digs deep. I’m very interested in how the personal and the corporate intersect, and this book offers some truly fresh insights. The authors get real personally. And share a step-by-step roadmap to help people cultivate personal and organizational resilience that will not only cope, but thrive in the face of disruption. This book has a depth not seen in typical business books (which is why I liked it). It’s a must read for leaders who want to not only manage change, but elevate it in their organizations – while finding their own purposeful, unshakable “due north”.

A Must Read for all Leaders

I don’t write reviews often, although felt compelled to write one in this case. THIS BOOK IS AWESOME.
Building resilience is not about bouncing back. “Building resilience is about finding that unstoppable spirit again. It’s about picking up your unstoppability and running with it – and inspiring your team to run alongside you.”

Before you can inspire others, it’s critical to dig deep and inspire yourself. For anyone who is a leader in an organization, which I would argue is just about everyone, this book is a must read!
